Ahupua’a of Waikiki collaboration with Hawai’i sea Grant and surf shack puzzles

I was commissioned by Hawai’i Sea Grant and Surf to create this illustration that documents the ahupua’a of Waikiki (from the bottom of the ocean up to the top of Manoa) and the flora and fauna found there.

I went on many educational field trips and worked with scientists from Hawaiʻi Sea Grant to develop this piece. We then collaborated with local sustainable puzzle company, Surf Shack Puzzles to create a 1000 piece puzzle with the illustration as a fun and innovative way to share the knowledge with multiple generations of people in Hawaiʻi and beyond.

50% of the proceeds generated from sales were donated to Hawaiʻi Sea Grant to support their service, research and education programs working to protect Hawaiʻi’s coastline and marine resources.

The box design was a key part of the project. It included a key for the species in the illustration as an educational element providing English names, Hawaiian names and Scientific names for identification.
